James looked out the window to the lawn and gardens that ran across the back of the lavishly apportioned house they referred to as their country home. Night had fallen so the colors were gone, but torches lighted the way through the maze of paths, and the dots of light looked like beautiful glowing stars that had come down to earth to sit on the ground. He could make out occasional shadows of various people walking in couples or in groups. The entire week had been exceptionally warm and pleasant, and the night air was refreshing and not cool in the least, drawing numerous people outside.

By all accounts, the party was a huge success. His mother, for all her stern, dreadful habits, knew how to host such a large event, and the dozens of guests were all enjoying themselves immensely. Everyone except himself. He'd never been more bored by anything.

He missed Anne.

He missed her bawdy talk, and her fiery passion. He missed her laughter and her funny stories, and her common sense and wit and outrageous behavior. At this very moment, the only place he truly wanted to be was in her bedroom in her bed, lying back against the pillows with her warm, lush body stretched across his chest. With his eyes closed, he could conjure up the feel of her skin, the smell of her hair.

"What am I doing here?" he muttered to the silent room.

Looking down, he stared for a long time at the papers in his hand. They had arrived by special messenger earlier in the day. His great-uncle had finally died, widowed and childless, and James had come into his inheritance. He was now a baron. It was not a particularly old title, nor a wealthy estate, but it was a title and it was an estate.

He'd visited there many times over the years, always knowing that the place would be his one day. It was a beautiful location, if a tad bit isolated in Cornwall, with a nice house, fertile fields, and prosperous tenants. The income was excellent for an estate its size. Those funds, coupled with the money left to him by his father, wouldn't make him a rich man, but certainly one who was well off.

This should have been a great day in his life. The greatest, perhaps. So, why wasn't he excited? He should be down the hall, charming the ladies and amusing the gentlemen, joining in the celebration, but he couldn't force himself to do it. Instead, he'd been hiding in the library for over an hour, hoping no one had noticed he'd disappeared. Everyone was so focused on Adam that he doubted anyone had, and he needed the solitary time to think about the future.

The inheritance wasn't something he'd talked about much, for the simple fact that he'd never wanted it to seem that he was some sort of ghoul, impatiently waiting for the gracious old gentleman to pass on. Few people knew about it, although the information had passed round the party quickly enough.
